Spiral Rain: Witch & Ohm – December 2022

This box takes so long to review I dread doing it. I love opening them, but try to avoid writing about them for as long as possible, which is why this review is being published long after I received the January box. I have a lot going on right now, including full-time classes doing a trades explorer program, so my time has been greatly diminished.

A reminder: starting in January 2023, there are two new subscription boxes being added to the Spiral Rain collection:

  1. Sabbat Box – Contains items to help celebrate the corresponding holidays
  2. Witchclass Box – Lessons and the items needed to practice each lesson

These sound great, and I can’t wait for my budget to make room to add them to my list!

Inside the Box

December Grimoire

This month’s grimoire contains all the usual information as well as special sections on Yule and Egyptian Witchcraft. It also has some announcements for the new things happening in 2023 as well as all the box themes for the coming year. I’m looking forward to them!

The Ohm box is changing to become more of a relaxation ritual. Each month will contain a bath ritual spell kit with a candle, a tea, and items to work with the month’s theme. The Apothecary box is also now tempting me as I have long been interested in herbal medicine, even taking a course on it many moons ago. I’m not sure I can justify another box right now.

Crystals Pages

These are beautiful pages containing information on the properties of different crystals. My only issue is that out of the five sheets, I got two duplicate pages. That means there are four crystals that I still know nothing about.

Crystals

I wasn’t expecting this many crystals. This is a lot for me, and I don’t really know what to do with them. I know they are important for a lot of people and I had a friend from work named Chris who was really into them. My issue is I have so many things in my house and it’s hard for me to get rid of other things because it’s almost guaranteed that they’ll go to the landfill. I wish our society was better at repurposing things as I feel a lot of pressure and guilt. Anyway, as these are more aesthetic than functional for my purposes they just take up more space. Oh well. My favourites are the two pyramidal ones.

8oz Crystals Candle

I still love these candle tins. They’re so funky and cool. I’m not a huge fan of the scent of this one, but maybe I’ll be more into it in spring/summer when a lighter scent is more thematic.

Book of Shadows Pages – Egyptian Gods

I absolutely love ancient Egyptian things. When I was little I used to watch documentaries and dreamed of being an archaeologist in Egypt for a bit. Unfortunately my brain isn’t great at retaining details, so what I learned about the mythology and gods did not stay for long. These are lovely reference pages to remind and inform me.

Green Quill/Glass Dip Pen with Ink

I think I may have used a quill pen in grade 5 on a field trip to the pioneer museum. I don’t remember actually using one, but I do remember being there. If I did use one, the technique did not stick as it took a few tries for me to get this one going. It’s a very cool experience and I enjoyed it very much. I definitely recommend writing with one at least once.

After some research, I think this is technically a glass dip pen. I had never seen one before, so I’m happy to have something unique (to me)!

Eye of Horus Necklace

My favourite part of this necklace is the attachment used to connect the pendant to the cord. I don’t know why, but I think it’s super cool. The pendant itself is way more sparkly than can be seen in the picture. It’s very pretty and the back has a lot of crystal chips of various colours in it. I lost the information sheet, so am at a loss on most of these items now.

Ankh Keychain

This keychain is made of wood with the eye of horus and ankh on one side and the Spiral Rain logo on the other. I think this is a cool addition to the box. I have lots of keys, so keychains are usually good to have around.

8oz Egyptian Witch Candle

This is a sweet, floral-smelling candle with some crystals, petals, and two Anubis head charms.

Goloka Egyptian Jasmine Pure Aroma Oil

This aroma oil is to be used only in an infuser and not on the skin. I wonder why that is. Although… I loved the scent of the dragon oil and put it on my chest and eventually developed a bit of a rash. I sure put a stop to that. But I wonder what’s in it that could possibly irritate the skin, or is it just the potency of the essential oil? I know many are toxic to cats.

Nefertum Tea

This Nefertum tea contains spearmint, lavender, rose petals, elderflowers, and red clover. I look forward to trying it, even though I am drowning in tea at the moment.

Heka Bath Tea

I don’t think one can have too many bath salts, especially in the winter. Baths are a great way to warm up and having a lovely mix to add to the bath makes them even better.

Overall Impression

I loved the Egyptian theme of the witch box this month and thought all the items were pretty cool. The Ohm box I was less thrilled about. If I wanted a pile of crystals I would have ordered the crystal box. It’s probably just because I don’t have quite the appreciation for them that I probably should. It also doesn’t help that 2 of my pages with the low down on the crystals were duplicates. I’m still happy with this box and look forward to the next one.
