Hygge in a Box – Spring Clearance Box Review

“Hygge, (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cozy, charming or special.”

If you watch the video, you will know that we did not know how to pronounce it at the time.

I love getting things on sale, even if it’s not the best thing, like when I scooped up the 4 Sweet Reads clearance boxes last summer. That ended up being a bit of a nightmare, but it’s hard to resist a good deal.

Inside the Box

Pine Cones

I don’t know the monetary value of these, so I haven’t included them in my total. I also don’t know where they’re from. Were they intentionally included? Are they from their yard? They are pretty cute.

I may have lots of pine cones in my yard, but we don’t have this type of pine cone. My dogs think pine cones are great toys. It comes from my late dog, Kita, who was a heeler x border collie and for a very long time was not interested in fetching. My brother figured out that he could get her to fetch if he had two pine cones. She would chase after the first, see you with the second, bring the first back, and then chase the second if you threw it. Repeat ad infinitum. She then taught Maila and Canek, who in turn taught Coco.

Can I just say yum?

I love popcorn, though popcorn doesn’t love me. This is delicious popcorn.

Eatable is a company from Toronto that makes sure their popcorn is free from:

  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Palm Oil
  • Vanillin: a synthetic ingredient from petrochemicals derived from crude oil
  • Caramel colour: artificial caramel colouring that contains a potentially carcinogenic chemical called 4-methylimidazole
  • Confectioner’s glaze: a solution in food-grade shellac containing resin
  • Titanium dioxide: used to enhance the colour of white in foods, and also found in sunscreen

Now I’m a bit afraid of other food. Can I just eat their popcorn and survive? Probably not. My digestive system is already on the fritz.

The link will take you to the guilt-free blueberry vanilla matcha because the regular version doesn’t seem to be listed on the website, despite being “one of [their] most popular matchas”.

Neither Tony nor I really like matcha, but we’re willing to give this one a try. I do really love a blueberry and vanilla combination. My mom used to make blueberry vanilla protein shakes when I was a kid and they tasted very good.

Three 6 Tea is from Selkirk Manitoba.

Ok, so I just attempted to make this. The instructions are so unclear. “Whisk in 2oz of hot water”. Am I supposed to mix the entire thing in 59ml of hot water? That would make it $14 for just one drink! I found some better instructions here: 1 tbsp in 2oz of water, then add your dairy or dairy alternative. I did this completely wrong. I put 3 tbsp in my cup of water and added a splash of milk. Oh well. The taste is actually pretty good.

I really like this towel. It’s made of 100% cotton and is super soft and lovely. Apparently some of its benefits are:

  • Fast drying time – about 25 minutes hanging (this is good because we have the worst dryer in existence)
  • Space saver for both storage, transportation, and washing
  • Multipurpose
  • Looks nice

Ok, I added the last two.

I look forward to trying out its absorption ability. If it works well, I’d love to eventually replace my terry towels to save on space. My current towels would then just become dog towels.

Mint + Grey started in 2021 and is from Calgary, Alberta. The founder and his family are originally from Turkey, so they should know Turkish towels.

Well, this is not my first encounter with this. The first time was in Maple’s Summer 2022 Box. If you watch the video, I’m positive I have three of these sets, but it’s actually a different item from three ships, so in reality I only have two sets. I think I was confusing that with the other lip sugar/exfoliator I got.

My lips are so thin and I’m a lip balm addict, so this isn’t a product that is really relevant to me. I guess I’ll need to start using it now that I have two sets. Oi!

Three ships started in 2017 and is located in Toronto, Ontario.

This looks like a fun way to make a cocktail. I don’t really drink, but this looks fun, easy, and delicious. I’ve never had an old fashioned, but I’m keen to try. It also looks like a great gift for a friend of mine.

Maiden Voyage was established in 2020 and is located in Gananoque, Ontario.

It’s a bit disappointing that this arrived broken. I was overly confident when I thought that I could pop it out the top with a butter knife. Alas, it is too spongy. Once I get it out, our house will be smelling like pine for a while.

I tried. I could not get it out. Pliers did not work. A knife did not work. I was able to puncture it with some scissors and make a hole wide enough for one reed. I tried to pour it out into another diffuser I have. It will not dump out, so I guess I will just diffuse with one reed.

Overall Impression

I’m actually pretty impressed with this box, despite the reed infuser being broken and the frustration that accompanied it. The fact that the box value exceeded what I paid by a fair amount is always a plus, and there were some really good products. Perhaps when a few subscriptions have ended I might try this one. Or maybe I’ll just wait for another clearance.
