The Balanced Company – Balanced Big Snacker July 2023

Because many of the food items expire fairly soon, I’m prioritizing the boxes with food before the rest. I chose a 3-month long subscription for this snack box.

Inside the Box

I also got this in the mini box. This bag expires in December, so we’ve (Tony’s) got a little more time to eat it up.

Bob’s Red Mill is an American company. Bob and his wife Charlee are adorable and have always had this mission: to provide wholesome food to their customers, build close relationships with farmers and suppliers, and treat their employees with generosity and respect. Mad respect from me.

Also got this is the mini snacker box. Also expires in September.

Sweet Monk was launched in April of 2017 in Guelph.

Also got this in the mini snack box. I did end up drinking the first one and I really quite liked in. I’m surprised that there is no added sugar because it’s very sweet. It was difficult for me to drink the whole thing because it was so sweet, but I eventually did.

Thirsty Buddha is a Canadian company, which I believe is based in Montreal because of the area code. They have a passion for healthy living and good food, and refuse to compromise taste for clean labels. Sounds good to me.

Oh boy. This expires August 24. It’s August 10 at the time of writing.

I don’t think I’ve ever disliked this popcorn. I’m not sure if I’ve had this particular flavour or another, but I think it’s decent popcorn. I certainly don’t have any hard feelings towards it.

Angie’s Boom Chicka Pop started in a garage in Minnesota.

At some point you’d think that I’d know what kettle corn is, having eaten it many times. Sadly I have to look it up. Ah, kettle corn is sweet. There you go. Here’s a not-so-sweet, but still sweet, popped corn. This expires September 1. I guess I’ll just be eating snacks for the foreseeable future.

Go Go Quinoa Puffs Mystery Sample

I am a sucker for a mystery. How did they puff up quinoa into snacks?

These are delicious. I can’t tell which one is which, but all the ones I’ve tried have been delicious. I have to stop eating so that Tony can try them when he gets home, but I don’t want to stop. Thankfully for him I’m sometimes a nice girlfriend.

GoGo Quinoa is a Canadian company from Laval, Quebec, whose “mission is to offer you tasty, nutritious and eco-responsible products for your well-being and that of our planet.”

Also got these in the mini box, and they also expire in October.

Seedwise is a Canadian company that “started SeedWise because [they’re] in love with powerful snacks that pack a seedy punch. No fillers. No grains. Just the unbelievably craveably power of seeds.”

I got one bar in my mini box, and now I’ve got 5 more! These expire on September 22. These bars are quite hard and take some effort to get through. Chocolate brownie is a bit of a stretch for this flavour, but I do taste the cacao. Mostly I taste the dates and banana. It’s nice they snuck in spinach powder.

Nola Baking is a Canadian company that focuses on healthier choices for granola, pancakes, and bars.

Also from Nola Baking, and I also got one bar of this apple cinnamon flavour in the mini box. This bar wasn’t as hard as the chocolate brownie one, and I think I like it better overall. I can really taste the apple and cinnamon, which are a winning combination for me. They snuck in sweet potato powder in this one. I would say this is a pretty decent bar overall.

Wahoo! Something that doesn’t expire in the next few months. These have a best by date of April 13, 2024! Huzzah! I am not at all surprised that these are from Vancouver, being dairy-free, egg-free, and gluten-free. There are a lot of vegans in Vancouver.

I am happy to see a picture on the back with the cracker topped with cheese, cucumber, and dill. This is a favourite combination of mine that I always forget about.

Freeyumm is a Canadian company from Vancouver, BC that focuses on allergen-free snacks.

This is apparently a vegan alternative to collagen, but it looks like it’s being discontinued. There is 50% off the mocha flavour because it expires in December, and the Berry flavour, though it expired in June, is on sale for $8.99. You mix a scoop in 1 cup of your favourite beverage (or water). I can’t imagine it tasting very good mixed with my favourite beverage.

The reviews look pretty good, so maybe sales just weren’t where they wanted to be. The most recent review is from August 2021.

Because I’m pregnant I’m supposed to consult my doctor before using. This just isn’t practical. My doctor is currently booking a month out, and then retires in December. Then I won’t even have a doctor. Thanks Canadian medical system!

Basd is a Canadian company from Coquitlam, BC that was founded in 2017. It focuses on “organic, plant-bāsd, vegan, and cruelty-free products”.

I was skeptical about how these could possibly taste like tacos, but I get it now. It’s got all the typical spices you’d get in an American taco. I don’t know how I feel about it, but it’s not the worst thing. The crackers are a bit soft. I think they expire on November 1, but it’s entirely possible they expired on January 11. I’m pretty sure it’s the former as Europeans tend to do day/month/year, whereas in Canada we tend to do month/day/year.

Swedish Protein imports their products into Canada via Viking Imports in Toronto.

I once worked at this horse farm, and the owner of the property, Manjinder used to make me the most delicious chai. I told her she wouldn’t get rid of me if she kept making me such delicious chai. She was pleased with this prospect, but I am a very shy person, and I only went back once after I quit the subcontractor I was working for at the time. Sadly, she wasn’t even home. She was a wonderful woman, and I still feel guilty about not continuing to visit her.

Anyway, these little toffees are individually wrapped. I am pleased and displeased with this. Pleased because they will stay fresher, and are easily portable. I am displeased because that is a lot of extra plastic.

The scent is fantastic, and the taste is pretty darn good too. I know it’s Chai, but it really reminds me of a happy Christmas.

Chimes was established in 2003, and this product is from Malaysia.

Overall Impression

This is a lot of items, but it’s not quite as advertised: “Packed with 10 to 12 full-size products PLUS 5 individual-size items, bonus products, and exclusive offers.” There are only 13 items total in this box, where it should be 15-17 according to the site. It’s not a big deal, and it’s probably due to the high cost of certain items, but I appreciate accuracy.

I also appreciate being exposed to a whole bunch of moderately healthy, potentially delicious foods.
