The Maple Box – Summer 2023

Whew. Okay. The Maple Summer box didn’t come until September 14. I know they’ve been having issues, which have apparently now been resolved, however it’s November 18 at the time of writing and the fall box still hasn’t arrived.

It’s another Maple magazine filled with more Maple magazine things. A sampling of this season’s topics are: stone medicine, the symbolic language of dreams, and how beans are good for your heart.

We actually got two varieties in this box but I seem to have lost the other package. I absolutely loved the hippo gummies, but Tony thinks they smell like cat urine. He ate the swedish hippos, which I wasn’t a fan of. I’ve never really liked swedish fish. In fact, I’ve never been a huge fan of candy anyway. It’s nice that these have way less sugar than regular candies and contain a whopping 13g of fibre! If I had to pick a favourite candy, these would be it. The company is Canadian, but they manufacture in the USA.

Here is another supplement that I must be cautious about taking at the moment, although my midwife did suggest supplementing calcium and magnesium for muscle pain. Hopefully the other stuff is okay as well. This expires in January of 2024, so that’s pretty bad news. Ah, nevermind. It also contains horsetail, which is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Ugh.

This toner smells absolutely gorgeous. It is hand prepared and locally grown. It can also be used to set mineral-based makeup, which surprised me. It contains rose hydrosol, lavender oil, and chamomile oil.

Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm is unsurprisingly in the Okanagan, and has this to say: “Inspired by the beauty of Canada’s Okanagan Valley, we cultivate and distill aromatic plants. We farm with passion, honouring regenerative agriculture techniques and strive to restore and improve the biodiversity and sustainability of our family farm.”

Amoda is a tea company from Richmond, BC. They say this about this particular beverage: “Matcha Glow is an energizing matcha latte blended with tremella mushroom, amla berry and our dairy-free tocos coconut creamer to wake up your mind and help your skin look and feel refreshed. Brighten your day, feel revitalized and hydrate your skin from the inside out. Rich matcha with vegetal notes and mellow umami, deliciously creamy coconut and a mild natural sweetness. Get your glow on!”

I’m curious to have a taste.

Good Juju is on a mission to prevent 50 million plastic bottles from entering the waste stream by 2030, They’re not quite 1% of the way there, but it’s still pretty impressive since they only started in 2021.

This specific shampoo bar is for scalp care and is intended to relieve dandruff and an itchy scalp. My scalp tends to get a lot of dandruff in the winter, so we’ll see how I fare with this.

Good Juju also does laundry strips, so I think I might give them a try at some point. According to Maple, they’re a Canadian business, but I can’t find anything definitive on their website.

Organic Cotton Turkish Towel

Another Turkish towel. I wasn’t really impressed with the absorbency of last one I got, so I’m thinking this one is not going to be much better. It is nice and soft, though, so maybe I can use it for something that doesn’t require wicking water away. This one is ethically manufactured and is GOTS certified, so at least there’s that.

Overall Impression

This was an okay box. I’m not feeling the value is there as much as it could be. Their own calculated total has it at $196, which is well below the estimated $230 value. The most expensive items, which are the Flora bone health supplement and the apparently $65 Turkish towel I would have happily passed on. Especially the supplement, as it’s probably not wise for me to take at this moment, so that’s $45 down the drain. I’ve found sometimes Maple boxes are really awesome, and sometimes they’re not. This is one of the latter ones.
