Manmade Boxer Briefs Review

Manmade Boxer Briefs 7-Pack

I decided to go for the 7-pack for these reasons:

  • Free shipping over $30.
  • The cost goes down from $24/pair to $22/pair.
  • Tony goes through underwear almost as fast as he goes through socks.

If he likes them, he might as well have lots of them. If he doesn’t, he’ll still have to wear them XD.

Cost: $24/pair + tax

My cost: $172.48

Highlights

  • Incredibly soft

Manufactured in: Sri Lanka

Company Base: Montréal, QC

Established in: 2020

Overall Impression

*Updated: January 27, 2025*

I haven’t noticed the horrible smell in many months now.

*Update: July 17, 2024*

At this point I can no longer recommend these boxers. Twice now they have come out of the wash with an acrid, sour smell. Nothing else in the wash smelled like that, including other boxers from different brands. For me, if clothing that is meant to be worn daily does not have an easy wash routine, or needs special detergent, it is not worth it. I’m not sure why these boxers in particular are especially prone to retaining and/or creating especially potent smells, but once was enough and twice revokes my recommendation. In the 14 years I’ve been doing men’s laundry this is the only brand it has happened with.

Original Review: June 17, 2023

This was a little harder for me to review as I’m not the one actually using them.

The Goods:

  • Really soft
  • No chafing
  • No riding up
  • WRAP certified manufacturing
  • Top-access fly

The Not-So-Goods:

  • Currently only one colour (black)
  • No “ball pouch”
  • Excessive packaging
  • Can leave fluff balls early on
  • Slightly transparent

Manmade’s boxer briefs have been in our possession for about 6 weeks at the time of writing. As the person who primarily does the laundry (though Tony may beg to differ), I enjoy folding these ones the most. They may be the plainest of the bunch, but my word are they soft. Tony likes them well enough and thinks the top-access fly is an interesting addition. Though Manmade states they have a “Mansack” for the testicles, it was something Tony specifically mentioned he was disappointed there was a lack of. I don’t have balls, so I have no idea which is true.

They are made of modal fabric, which they claim is better than cotton because less water is used. They also include 9% elastane. The price is actually kind of mid-range, making these accessible to a large swathe of people. For comparison, Manscaped offers theirs at $39.99, TenTree at $40, and SAXX at $37. Of course there are much cheaper options, like Uniqlo at $12.90, or Hanes for $5.99, but at $24, Manmade is kind of in the middle.

For me, the ethical manufacturing is a huge plus. They recently released a video where they went to Sri Lanka to tour the factory. The video is a bit contrived, but the factory conditions look pretty decent. The workers are unionized and get two meals a day and transportation to and from work. The latter is a big deal as Sri Lanka is currently in an economic crisis and transportation can be an issue.

Overall, I would recommend Manmade boxer briefs as long as you’re not parading around in public as they’re a bit see-through. As their company grows, they will have more offerings, including more colours of underwear. On the slate currently is heather grey. I was hoping for something a little more colourful, but grey is a good, safe choice.

The pack of seven and a hand-written note
Do they really need to be individually wrapped in plastic?

    1. It’s not outside of the price range for that tier of underwear, but they’re certainly not cheap. Manmade stated that they couldn’t make a profit manufacturing in Canada. I’m not sure what they were quoted, but underwear don’t seem that complicated to make and Mother-ease appear to manufacture their diapers in Canada for cheaper than those boxer briefs.

  1. customer service grade is a flat “F”. Their carrier of choice delivered my order to an incorrect address and they wouldn’t even answer repeated emails requesting help. The four young men that own the company really need to address this. A great company can afford to lose money, but you can never afford to lose your reputation.

  2. Hello…… I have read your review on the Manmade briefs & what bothers me is the info on the “Acrid smell” on the material after washing. Does this smell persist even when dry?? I have considered purchasing some, but your description could change my mind. Please give me your thoughts.

    Thank you Larry Z

    1. Hi Larry,

Honestly, it was just an occasional issue and that thankfully I haven’t noticed it since last July. It was a real pain to try to deal with at the time and I think I ended up having to do a vinegar wash to get the smell out. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the modal fabric, but I’m not sure what exactly. If the rest of it appeals to you, I’d say go for it. You might never have that problem, and they are very soft.

  3. Shame on you guys, not telling the customer where they are made. You are not supporting the business community in Montreal.

You are most likely paying $ 3.00 a pair and charging $25.00, you can purchase the raw material and have them made in Quebec, you would still make a healthy profit.

    My final thought is GREED.

    1. Hi Mike,

If you know how much clothing manufacturing costs are in Quebec, I’d love to have the details! I’ve often wondered why we don’t manufacture more clothing in Canada. Do you have any Canadian clothing manufacturers that you love?

As for Manmade, they’re not totally secretive about where they manufacture, as I found out the information on their site. They also released a video in 2023 about their manufacturer in Sri Lanka, although it looks like they are now also using manufacturers in China and Taiwan, according to their FAQ.
