I love ketchup and so does my 2-year old son. When I got the ad for this Canadian brand touting to be the best ketchup, of course I had to try it. Our ketchup was getting low, so I ordered two bottles from Sinai Gourmet to take advantage of their free shipping promotion. It took longer to get here than I expected and we ended up having to buy a regular bottle of French’s to tide us over (I’m still salty about Heinz).
The bottles came well packed, which is especially good since the 355ml bottles are glass. There was even a fragile sticker on the outside of the box. I hadn’t seen that in a very long time.
Sinai Gourmet “specializes in clean label condiments that are as close to how your grandmother use to make food as a company can get.” (from their FAQ), which is something that is definitely something that I appreciate.
It has a different consistency than I’m used to. It is thicker, but less viscous, so came out of the bottle pretty fast. That is why there is an exorbitant amount of ketchup on that tiny plate in the photo above.
The ingredients are as follows: Tomato paste, Water, Vinegar, Brown sugar, Sea salt, and Spices.
Overall Impression
I’m sad to say that I don’t like it. To my palate it has a pretty heavy and somewhat smoky taste, and I hate smoky profiles. Both my toddler and partner called it spicy, but I didn’t find it spicy. I definitely think it has a much stronger flavour than French’s, Heinz, etc. but my toddler really likes it. I don’t know yet if he prefers it over other ketchups, but he was happy to eat it. My partner also likes the ketchup, and he’s not a big ketchup fan.

The Not-So-Goods:
- Very different flavour if you’re looking to swap out like for like
Good for People Who:
- Enjoy strong flavours
- Are somewhat adventurous with their sauces
This ketchup is not up my alley, but both my toddler and partner enjoy it. I wouldn’t buy it again for my own consumption, but if the household requests it, I won’t turn them down. However, I would need to find it locally. The regular shipping is too expensive for me to justify at this point in my life. This is probably why they send a card in their box to convince retailers to stock it locally.
